If you’ve never written a math research paper before, don’t be intimidated:  just find a problem you like and explore it!  Just be sure to make it your own.

Start with a math problem you like, and solve it.  Then, solve it in a different way!  Or, change the problem slightly, and solve the new problem.  Make it a bit more complex, make it bit more general, make it a bit more challenging, and keep solving.  At the end, write up everything you did, and you’ve got yourself a math paper!

Click here to look at some basic outlines that will give you a sense of how to structure your exploration.

Ask your math teacher for guidance when needed, and be sure to tell them to contact us about submitting your paper to this year’s Math Fair!
